On Tuesday, October 8, 2019, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges on suspect DeMarco Washington, 32 years of age, of the 10700 block of Spring Garden Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63136, for one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child First Degree. Washington is being held on $250,000 “cash only” bond. A mugshot of Washington is attached.

The probable cause statement reads: The defendant is the biological father of the victim, J.W., and on February 18, 2019, J.W. was under the care of the defendant in the 10700 block of Spring Garden Drive. During the early morning hours of February 18, 2019, witnesses observed J.W. to be unresponsive while on a bed, and she was ultimately pronounced deceased. Toxicology analysis determined that J.W. had fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl in her system. J.W.’s cause of death was determined to be acute fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl intoxication. The defendant told police that he ingested fentanyl while caring for J.W. on or about February 18, 2019, and that he lost a capsule of fentanyl in the bedroom where J.W. was located. J.W. was approximately eleven months old when she died.

Detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons are conducting the investigation.
