On Tuesday, January 7, 2019, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges on suspect Cortez Caves, 23 years of age, of the 1400 block of Barkwood Drive in Florissant, Missouri 63031, for two counts of Murder in the First Degree, one count of Assault in the First Degree, two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and three counts of Armed Criminal Action. Caves is being held on a $750,000 “cash only,” no 10% bond. A mugshot of Caves is attached.
The probable cause statement reads: Officers were notified of an active shooting on Jennings Station Road, just south of McLaran; where a Ford Fusion was peppered with gunfire form the occupants of a black SUV. Trevion Berry, who was seated in the passenger seat of the Ford Fusion, was killed by the gunfire. The driver of the Ford Fusion escaped injury.
The black SUV drove off and returned. As the black SUV approached Jennings Station Road and McLaran, the second victim, driving a Kia, was turning onto McLaran.
The black SUV pulled along the driver’s side of the Kia, and the occupants fired multiple gunshots into the driver’s side. This was captured on video. The driver of the Kia, Byron Staples, died from his gunshot wounds. The Defendant was identified by photo lineups as being in the black SUV moments before the shooting as well as being one of the shooters.
Detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons are conducting the investigation.
